In the 1980s, adoption educators Deborah Silverstein and Sharon Kaplan Roszia identified the seven core issues of adoption. They used the term “core” because these issues apply to birth parents, adoptees, and adoptive parents. And they observed that members of the adoption triad may encounter and revisit these issues throughout their lives.

Angela Welch, LPC/MA, is the post-placement services consultant for Bethany’s Post-Adoption Contact Center. In this e-book, she shares an overview of each core issue: grief, loss, rejection, control, identity, intimacy, and shame. Links to additional resources are included.
