Keeping siblings together
James and Tamisha's story
For years James and Tamisha talked about becoming foster parents, setting aside the discussion until it circled back again. When they were ready, they made a plan to meet a very clear need: “We wanted to keep a group of siblings together,” James said, “and provide a place where they could feel safe together.”
Every city in every state is experiencing a shortage of foster homes. Sometimes a case worker’s only option is to call a family already fostering, such as a family caring for three children but licensed for four with one open bed. This shortage of open foster homes drives sibling separation, making the foster care experience so much harder for kids.
James and Tamisha’s first call was for a sibling group of four. Their yes to foster care meant four children who had moved around the system apart care could finally be together.
